Foxcroft runs at Festival of Champions

    BELFAST — The Foxcroft Academy cross country team competed with some of the best from the state and beyond at the 2013 Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions Oct. 5 at Troy Howard Middle School.

    The Pony boys earned a score of 1,604 points to place 55th out of 57 full teams. Junior Noah Simpson was the first Foxcroft runner to cross the finish line as he covered the 5K course in 19 minutes, 27.83 seconds to place 302nd out of 791 finishers.
    Other Foxcroft runners were sophomore Gabe Piquette, 314th at 19:31.32; sophomore Yung-Ting Tsai, 542nd at 21:26.71; freshman Taylor Smith, 596th at 22:01.04; and freshman Ethan Poland, 722nd at 24:24.51.
    Winning the boys race was senior Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar Regional High School in Bethel. Holt-Andrews’ time of 15:06.92 broke the meet and course record of 15:26.64, set one year prior by Mike Tate of Dr. JH Gillis High School in Nova Scotia.
    Coming in first in the boys team standings was Lewiston High School with a score of 87 points. In second place was Harwood Union High School of South Duxbury, Vt. with 107 points and then Cape Elizabeth High School with 138 points.
    Three Foxcroft girls ran at the Festival of Champions. Senior Clara Stephens finished 282nd out of 623 finishers in a time of 23:39.54. Placing 410th was sophomore Jen Clawson in 25:11.19, and 512th was junior Ana Sedlackhova in 27:15.81.
    The girls’ winner was sophomore Kialeigh Morrison of Bonny Eagle High School in Standish, in a time of 18:42.94. Mount Desert Island High School came in first in the team standings with 95 points, followed by 181 for Falmouth High School and Harwood Union’s 232.
    Foxcroft returned to action on Oct. 10 when the team ran in the second annual Red Riot Challenge at Orono High School. The Pony boys finished with 75 points, the same as Lee Academy who had the tie-breaker edge to place third with Foxcroft in fourth.
    Piquette led the Ponies by placing ninth out of 33 runners. He covered the 4K course in 15:55.54. Simpson was right behind in 10th place at 15:59.11.
    The rest of the Foxcroft boys included Tsai, 16th at 16:53.89; Smith, 23rd at 19;23.14; junior Zhe Chen, 26th at 19:51.63; and Poland, 29th at 21:23.52.
    Four Pony girls ran in the Red Riot Challenge. Senior Liza Grigoryeva came in fifth out of 22 entrants with a time of 18:35.1. Stephens placed 10th at 19:54.3; Clawson was 13th at 21:31.1; and in 15th place with a time of 21:54.8 was Sedlackhova.
