South Sangerville Grange hosts fundraising dinner for the state champion PCSS Envirothon team

SANGERVILLE — The South Sangerville Grange hosted a very successful bean hole bean supper on July 20 for the Piscataquis Community Secondary School’s Envirothon team. The team won the statewide Envirothon championship and is raising funds to support the trip to Bozeman, Mont. to compete in the national Envirothon competition Aug. 4-10. The Envirothon team members, PCSS biology teacher and Envirothon coach Heather Doherty and the members of the South Sangerville Grange served close to 150 people and raised $1,143. They cooked 17 pounds of beans, ran out of all their delicious desserts and homemade rolls.

When asked about her reaction to the success of this great fundraiser, Doherty said, “There are no words to express how thankful the PCSS Envirothon team is to the South Sangerville Grange for putting on such a wonderful benefit supper, and to the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District for their help to coordinate this. The Grange members are so thoughtful and caring. They represent what living in small-town, rural Maine is all about. The team and I can never thank them enough and all the people that came to the dinner to support us.”
Envirothon is a statewide competition coordinated by the Maine Association of Conservation District’s Education Committee, in partnership with Maine’s 16 conservation districts that is designed for students looking to test their knowledge of natural resources and current environmental issues. The Envirothon was established as a competitive, problem-solving, natural resource event for high school students to challenge them about the environment. Thousands of high school students have met the challenge and have come away wiser and more concerned about the natural world and their environment.
Doherty, team members and the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District worked with the South Sangerville Grange to develop this fundraising event. If you would like to help the team with their travel expenses, you may send your donation to “Envirothon”, Piscataquis Community Secondary School, 9 Campus Drive, Guilford, Maine, 04443.
