Charlotte White Center receives $6,850 grant from the Maine Community Foundation
BANGOR — The Charlotte White Center (CWC), a non-profit organization with over 30 years of experience providing support services to individuals facing the life challenges of cognitive, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, as well as behavioral health issues, announces a $6,850 grant from the Little Red School House Fund and the Norman E. Brearley Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.
The grant supports Jack Does That, an hour exchange that was recently founded as a program of the Charlotte White Center. Jack Does That (JDT) helps connect those with skills and services to offer with others who are looking for help. The program coordinator, Patrick Myers, states that the goal of JDT is to facilitate exchanges of time and talents between people without money being an issue, “People exchange skills and services based on the amount of time they spend. It gives folks who have something to offer and people who need things done a way to connect and find value in what they do without money changing hands.”
Myers explained that when a member of JDT performs a service they get that time recorded in their “time bank” which they can then use to get something from another member. He gave the following example, “If I mow your lawn for an hour, then I get that hour in my on-line time bank. I can then ask a plumber in the exchange to come to my house to work for an hour on a leaky faucet that I haven’t been able to fix. The hour exchange gives us a chance to use skills and talents we have to help others and then get help in return.”
Anyone interested in learning more about the hour exchange can visit www.JackDoesThat.org. Those without a computer or with more questions can call 270-3613 and speak to Patrick Myers the hour exchange coordinator. There is a suggested annual donation of $10 for individuals and $50 for businesses and organizations. The next new-member orientation will be held at the Charlotte White Center, 572 Bangor Road in Dover-Foxcroft on Wednesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. Jack Does That is an hour exchange located in Central Maine. JDT members exchange services on an hour-for-hour basis and everyone’s time is equal.
