Teen dies in Sebec River

SEBEC — On Monday, evening six subjects were swimming in the Sebec River near the dam in the village. At approximately 6:55 p.m., one of the subjects Dacano D. Arno, 17, of Dover-Foxcroft, went swimming in the river and did not surface. Members of his party flagged down a vehicle for help and also found Warden Dan Carroll’s residence located close to the scene. Warden Carroll responded and a search and rescue effort ensued.

Arno was located near the base of the dam at 8 p.m. by two local persons who were assisting with the search effort, one of which was the young man’s uncle. Arno was pronounced dead by a member of the Mayo Ambulance crew. Assisting in the search were the Sebec Fire Department, Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department, Milo Fire Department, Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department, Brownville Police Department, as well as members of the Maine Warden Service. The incident remains under investigation.
In a letter to the Foxcroft Academy community posted on the school website the evening of June 3, Head of School Arnold Shorey wrote, “It was with the deepest regret and sadness that we learned at approximately 7:45 p.m. this evening of a swimming accident that occurred in Sebec Village involving Dacano Arno, a junior at Foxcroft Academy. Soon after it was confirmed by the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office that Dacano had passed away.
Dacano was a wonderful young man who was liked by everyone, and it is impossible for us at this point to even begin to process this extraordinarily tragic loss. Our entire staff will be meeting prior to school tomorrow to provide support for one another and to develop plans for helping our student body through what will be an incredibly difficult and painful day of school. Counselors will be on hand at Foxcroft Academy all day tomorrow and after school as long as needed.”
