Upcoming Forests of Maine Teachers’ Tours

Visit modern timber harvests, a logging museum, a paper mill and mills that make wood pellets on this summer’s Forests of Maine Teachers’ Tours. There are still openings for formal and non-formal educators to attend the July 9-12 Teachers’ Tour at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Gorman Chairback Lodge and Cabins near Moosehead Lake and the July 23-26 Tour at Twin Pine Camps on Millinocket Lake near Mt. Katahdin. CEU’s and college credits are available.

Offered by the Maine TREE Foundation for the 16th year, the acclaimed four-day tours will focus on the harvest and production of wood and fiber, including renewable energy and traditional forest products. Teachers in grades K-12, Girl and Boy Scout leaders, adult educators, Land Trust members and staff and Conservation Commission members are among those who will find a wealth of information about Maine’s forest resource on the tours and ways to share it with their students, colleagues and communities.
A Project Learning Tree Workshop is offered on the first day and educators will tour renewable energy and wood products manufacturers, including a wood pellet mill, a paper mill and a biomass facility. They will visit active harvests using modern equipment and discuss the information and planning required to practice sustainable forestry with landowners, foresters, loggers, mill owners and scientists.
