STANCHFIELD, Lawrence Douglas, Jr., 82, of Bangor, February 24, 2013. A memorial celebration will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Park Street United Methodist Church, Milo. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home, Milo.
BANGOR – Lawrence Douglass Stanchfield, Jr., 82, husband of Carolyn J. (Heal) Stanchfield, died peacefully at home February 24, 2013. He was born December 26, 1930, in Milo, the son of Doris E. (Bailey) and Lawrence D. Stanchfield, Sr. He attended Milo Schools, graduating from Milo High School in 1948
After serving two years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, he attended Husson College from which he graduated in 1956. Larry was employed by the U.S. General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C., the University System of New Hampshire, Husson College, and the University of Maine System. He was instrumental in establishing the Internal Audit Department for UMS and became the first Director. After retiring from UMS in 1996, he was an Internal Audit consultant for World Learning in Brattleboro, VT. He also attended the University of Maine, the University of Omaha, and Strayer College in Washington, D.C., and taught Internal Auditing at Husson College, as well as conducting seminars and workshops for several professional organizations.
Larry was active in numerous organizations throughout the years, most recently the Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter of the Korean War Veterans, Milo High School Reunion Committee, University Credit Union Board of Directors, and the Orrington Housing Corporation. He was also a 58-year member of Piscataquis Lodge No. 44.
Larry was happiest when surrounded by his family, always looking forward to any family outing or get together. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Kay; a son, Lawrence Douglass Stanchfield III of Old Town; four daughters, Kristin Watson and her husband, Wayne, of Wiscasset, Dorothy Baker and her husband, Donald of Orland, Bethany Smith and her husband, Fred, of Dedham, and Amy Peabody and her husband, Todd of Old Town. “Pa” was very proud of his ten grandchildren, Scott Morelli, Terah Ames, Amy Figueiredo, Dana Carey, Mark Baker, Sean Baker, Sam Peabody, Jeremiah Smith, Gabrielle Peabody, and Simon Smith; and great-grandchildren, Sam Cyr, Michael Ames, Olivia and Isabelle Morelli, as well as Colby, Patrick, Mitchell and Dawson. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Jo Hall; a brother-in-law, Charles Stevens; his former daughter-in-law, Diane Carey; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Pippin. Pa’s love and memory will live on in all his family.
He was predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Virginia Stevens and Clara Chase.
The family wishes to thank Cheryl Nelson for the care and compassion she gave to Larry during the past several months. Also special thanks are extended to Beacon Hospice, Loving Touch, Dr. Chelberg, Trudy Neal, Orono Commons, Gentiva Home Health Care, and Fred Hardin.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 1, 2013, at Old Town United Methodist Church, 744 Stillwater, Old Town, ME. A memorial celebration will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Park Street United Methodist Church, Milo, with Rev. Michele St. Cyr officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Milo, at a later date.
