Amasa “Stubby” E. Sherman, Jr.
DOVER-FOXCROFT – Amasa “Stubby” E. Sherman, Jr., 75, husband of Joyce Prouty Sherman, passed away peacefully February 9, 2013, at EMMC in Bangor. He was born May 18, 1937, the son of Amasa Sr. and Ruth (Murch) Sherman.
Stubby was a 1955 graduate of Orono High School, where he played football and was involved in several clubs. Following high school, he attended Gorham State Teachers’ College and the University of Maine, earning a degree in Industrial Arts. After graduation, he began his teaching career where he taught industrial arts at Hall-Dale High School and then Orono High School. His love for cooking brought him into the restaurant business where he was the head chef and part owner of the High Seas Restaurant in Bar Harbor. His cooking was enjoyed by all, and his specialty shish kabobs were featured in Bangor Metro Magazine.
Stubby retired in 1998 as the owner and operator of Prouty Auto Body in Dover-Foxcroft. He enjoyed flying his plane, driving around in his Mercedes kit car that he had built, as well as being outside playing countless rounds of golf at Foxcroft Golf Club and putting thousands of miles on his snowmobile during the winter. He enjoyed many summers on Sebec Lake, working around camp and playing captain of his party boat. Stubby was well known for his storytelling ability. He will always be remembered for flying with the geese, sharing biscuits with hungry squirrels, and controlling those darn seagulls. Always wanting to help others, Stubby was a proud member of Mosaic Lodge No. 52, Dover-Foxcroft, Scottish Rites Bodies, Anah Shriners, Tri-County Shrine Club, and Bangor Court No. 150 Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of Foxcroft Golf Club and the Piscataquis Valley Snowmobile Club.
Stubby is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Joyce; his mother, Ruth; son, Shane Sherman and his wife, Barbara; and daughter, Allison Sands, and her husband, Wesley. The light of his life were two grandchildren, Owen Sherman and Brailey Sands. Stubby was also survived by sons, Amasa Sherman III, and Kerry Sherman; daughter, Cindy Lucas and her husband, Jim; two sisters, Sharon Sparks and her husband, Richard, and Dianne White and her husband, Greg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Amasa Sherman, Sr.; brothers Frederick and Stanley Sherman, and sister Charlotte LaPointe.
Friends and family are invited to visit and share stories of Stubby’s life from 1 – 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. There will be a golf scramble in his name during the summer of 2013.
