Tom and Nancy Harrigan presented with Myrick Award for contributions to Milo and beyond

A Milo couple who over the last half decade have given back in the form of the Three Rivers Kiwanis Building, the Harrigan Learning Center & Museum, and the Milo-Brownville & Points North Visitor Center, all located in their hometown’s Eastern Piscataquis Business Park, have been honored as the 16th recipients of the Warren “Pete” Myrick Award by the Executive Committee of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (PCEDC). Tom and Nancy Harrigan were presented with the honor on Dec. 10 at The Commons at Central Hall during the PCEDC annual meeting.

Jonny Law is gone. That is what he called himself – at least with his email address. Retired Maine Game Warden and two-term sheriff of Waldo County, author and artist, John Ford Sr. of Brooks passed on in November after a 20-year battle with cancer.

Foxcroft Academy named an IB Diploma Program School

Recently Foxcroft Academy received word from International Baccalaureate (IB) that the school’s candidacy has been accepted to become a full IB Diploma Program school, with classes beginning at the start of the 2019-20 school year. SAD 4 officials contemplating PCHS digital sign design

Piscataquis Community High School is the home of the Pirates, but over the decades the swashbuckler logo for the institution has varied. SAD 4 district officials have been seeking public input on the pirate design and lettering -- including posting four options on the PCHS Pirates Sports Central Facebook page -- for a new LED digital sign to be erected in the near future.

Maine’s high court upholds Burton murder conviction

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court on Tuesday, Dec. 11 upheld the murder conviction of the man who led authorities on the longest manhunt in state history. Robert Burton, 41, of Abbot is serving a 55-year sentence at the Maine State Prison in Warren for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Ginn Gebo, 37, of Parkman after breaking into her home more than three years ago. A jury convicted him of murder in October 2017.

MDI defeats Foxcroft in Ponies’ home opener

The Foxcroft Academy girls battled back to get within one at 29-28 late in the third quarter during the Ponies’ 2018-19 home opener in a Class B North matchup against Mount Desert Island High School on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The Trojans would then pull ahead and hold on for a 52-36 victory.

Foxcroft wrestling finishes second at Ryan Detour Tournament

On Saturday, Dec. 9 the Foxcroft Academy wrestling team traveled to Bucksport High School for the annual Ryan Detour Tournament. This event was the regular season opener for all 12 Penobscot Valley Conference teams attending.

In the early ‘90s, with the introduction of email, a growing internet, internet accessibility, and affordable computers, I saw potential for the legislators I worked with to have communications networks with their constituents. Actually, I envisioned legislators’ email communication networks branching in all directions: legislator to constituent; constituent to legislator, and all the networking variations therein.

Local Key Clubs host special advance screening of ‘Bumblebee’ at Center Theatre Monday evening

Light, camera, action! On Monday, Dec. 17 the Center Theatre is proud to announce that it will be hosting an advance screening of the new action-packed Transformers movie "Bumblebee" nearly a week before it opens to the public nationwide. Thanks to the work of the Foxcroft Academy, Dexter Regional High School, and Greenville High School Key Clubs with the Thirst Project, Paramount Pictures has offered this movie, at no charge to the theatre and guests, to be screened at Center Theatre as a thank-you for the students' efforts.

At the annual Christmas party at the Sebec Village Reading Room. Eliza Cary of Bowerbank had the opportunity to tell Santa what she wants for Christmas.

‘A North Country Christmas’ Dec. 23 at Center Theatre

On Sunday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. Susan Ramsey & The North Country Strings perform "A North Country Christmas" at the Center Theatre, 20 East Main Street. The program is rescheduled from Dec. 2.

‘A Wicked Christmas Carol’ at Center Theatre brings audiences to their feet

On Friday night, Dec. 7, the Center Theatre and the Slightly Off-Center Players debuted a new work by award-winning playwright Bobby Keniston. His new work “A Wicked Christmas Carol” brings Dickens’ classic story “A Christmas Carol” to the land of Oz and casts it with characters from L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.”
