53 more Mainers have died and another 1,123 coronavirus cases reported across the state

Fifty-three more Mainers have died and another 1,123 coronavirus cases reported across the state, Maine health officials said Thursday.
Thursday’s report brings the total number of coronavirus cases in Maine to 224,048, according to the Maine CDC. That’s up from 222,925 on Wednesday.
Of those, 163,130 have been confirmed positive, while 60,918 were classified as “probable cases,” the Maine CDC reported.
Thirty men and 23 women have succumbed to the virus, bringing the statewide death toll to 2,024.
Nine were from Androscoggin County, six from Aroostook County, 10 from Cumberland County, three from Franklin County, four from Kennebec County, one from Knox County, one from Lincoln County, three from Oxford County, nine from Penobscot County, three from Somerset County and four from York County.
Of those, 26 people were 80 or older, eight were in their 70s, seven in their 60s, eight in their 50s, two in their 40s, one in their 20s and one was younger than 20.
The number of coronavirus cases diagnosed in the past 14 days statewide is 39,434. This is an estimation of the current number of active cases in the state, as the Maine CDC is no longer tracking recoveries for all patients. That’s up from 39,426 on Wednesday.
The new case rate statewide Thursday was 8.39 cases per 10,000 residents, and the total case rate statewide was 1,673.99.
The most cases have been detected in Mainers younger than 20, while Mainers over 80 years old account for the largest portion of deaths. More cases have been recorded in women and more deaths in men.
So far, 4,305 Mainers have been hospitalized at some point with COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Information about those who are currently hospitalized wasn’t immediately available.
The total statewide hospitalization rate on Thursday was 32.17 patients per 10,000 residents.
Cases have been reported in Androscoggin (21,577), Aroostook (11,324), Cumberland (46,254), Franklin (5,486), Hancock (6,885), Kennebec (21,213), Knox (5,585), Lincoln (4,906), Oxford (10,705), Penobscot (25,695), Piscataquis (2,812), Sagadahoc (4,774), Somerset (9,029), Waldo (5,742), Washington (3,908) and York (37,928) counties. Information about where an additional 225 cases were reported wasn’t immediately available.
An additional 718 vaccine doses were administered in the previous 24 hours. As of Thursday, 986,697 Mainers are fully vaccinated, or about 77 percent of eligible Mainers, according to the Maine CDC.
As of Thursday morning, the coronavirus had sickened 78,731,240 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as caused 941,909 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine.
