New cycling group looks to hit the road

DOVER-FOXCROFT — It is a widely recognized fact that bicycling (along with swimming) is almost a perfect form of low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed at almost any age. During this time of COVID-19, bicycling as a group activity is perfectly safe provided at least six feet of social distancing is observed.

Hunt and Allison Smith are new to Dover-Foxcroft and are avid road cyclists. In conjunction with the Piscataquis Regional YMCA, they are forming the Penquis Cyclists, a club for all ages with the aim of organized group rides along the roads of the region.

The Smiths invite all to an informational meeting at the Piscataquis Regional YMCA at 5 p.m. on  Wednesday, July 22. They will talk about bicycle safety, show different kinds of bicycles and equipment and discuss the possible routes. Where they ride and how challenging the routes will depend on the group that forms.

Whether you have a shiny new multi-speed road bike or an old dusty mountain bike, you are encouraged to come be a part of the discussion and the fun and excitement of riding together.
