$100 prize for Piscataquis County logo winner

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Earlier this year Piscataquis County invited students of all ages to design a logo or seal that celebrates the region’s heritage and beauty, which will be used on documents, online, and elsewhere. In addition to having the honor of creating a logo for the county, the winner will also receive a $100 prize. 

County Manager Mike Williams said he had been approached by an anonymous benefactor who wanted to reward the winning student artist. The county commissioners were agreeable to the monetary prize during a meeting on Tuesday morning.

Submissions from students in Greenville, RSU 68, SAD 4, SAD 41, and homeschoolers are being accepted at the county office through the end of the day on April 14. Students should mail or drop off their designs to the commissioners’ office at 163 East Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft or email Williams at countymanager@piscataquis.us.

A panel of judges will choose the winning design by May 26.

Other Maine counties have logos on county websites, but Piscataquis County has never had one of its own. Williams broached the idea of designing an official logo for Piscataquis County when he first took on the position, and it came up again more recently after Commissioner Paul Davis asked for business cards. 

In other business, the commissioners learned the Piscataquis County Emergency Management Agency has been distributing AEDs to communities across the region. Three devices have been placed in sheriff’s office vehicles and another is now housed at the department’s Guilford office.

Williams said that road consultant Carl Henderson told him the county’s roads look to be in good shape. Henderson said travelways in the northern part of Piscataquis County have from 5- to 6-foot high snow banks.

“As these melt this spring odds are we’re going to have water in the roads which makes them muddier,” Williams said about the likely upcoming road conditions.
