Dexter Town Council approves purchase of $580K fire truck

DEXTER — In about 15 months, Dexter Fire Department will have a shiny, new fire truck stationed at its department.

Town councilors unanimously approved the purchase of the truck, a 2023 E-One Fire Apparatus, at a meeting Thursday. It will cost the town $581,099.

A fire truck this new and expensive is a big investment for a small town and fire department, King said. Firefighters have been trying to acquire a new truck for the last decade or so and did their homework to make sure they made a good choice, he said.

The town is using $200,000 from a reserve account to pay for the truck, and will pay about $82,000 a year for five years, he said.

It will take about 15 months for Greenwood Emergency Vehicles to build the truck, King said Friday.

The council also authorized the purchase of a 2008 motor grader for $48,000.

The town’s current motor grader is a 1995 model with 11,000 hours on it, and equipment like this typically needs to be replaced once it hits 10,000 hours, King said. The new one has 4,500 hours on it.

“We’re cutting down the time,” he said. “It took us 25 years to get to 11,000 hours. We just added 13 years of life.”

The purchase of a grizzly screen for $8,500 was also approved.

An earlier version of this story listed the cost of the fire truck incorrectly. It is $581,099.
