GUILFORD — Puritan Medical Products, a Guilford-based global manufacturer of single-use products will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2019.

Puritan’s management team attributes “innovation, evolution, and authenticity” to the longevity of the organization, which originated from humble beginnings in 1919 as the Minto Toothpick & Specialty Company. At the time, the company manufactured a single product: mint-flavored toothpicks. Not long thereafter, the founders recognized an opportunity to expand into other markets, which prompted a name change to Hardwood Products and the creation of the Puritan brand.

Puritan Medical Products Co, LLC, has since evolved into a global manufacturer of single-use products for many industries, such as diagnostics, specimen collection and microbiology media, forensics and genetics, environmental, medical, and controlled environments. Its product line consists of more than 1,200 devices, including swabs, specimen transport systems, molecular media production, tongue depressors, and environmental sampling kits, among many others.

100 YEARS FOR HARDWOOD PRODUCTS — This year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Hardwood Products Company in Guilford. The business began as the Minto Toothpick and Specialty Company in Saginaw, Michigan in 1919 and today operates as the Hardwood Products and the Puritan Medical Products Company divisions, employing more than 500 in the manufacturing of products such as tipped applicators, tongue depressors, and other medical and non-medical disposable woodenware and related products.

The nature and diversity of Puritan products allows the organization to make a broad impact. Puritan products touch the lives of millions of end users every year – but most are not even aware of it.

“Puritan products are at the core of a wide array of systems that improve people’s health, safety, and overall quality of life,” states Timothy Templet, executive vice president of sales. “Feeling sick? That’s a Puritan vial that’s safely transporting the specimen to the lab for testing. Did you see the headline about the crime that just got solved? It may have been a Puritan swab that the forensic investigators used to collect the DNA. Does your daughter like to look up in the sky and see the International Space Station pass overhead? That spacecraft is kept safe through the environmental testing products Puritan manufactures.

“The range of lives we touch is truly amazing,” continued Templet. “This is what sets the stage for us for another 100 years of success.”

Puritan is planning a series of employee and community events throughout the year as well as customer appreciation and other outreach efforts to celebrate the people who have been the foundation of Puritan’s ability to achieve the 100-year milestone.
