Red Cross volunteer information session Feb. 5 in Greenville
GREENVILLE — Across the country, the American Red Cross responds to an emergency every eight minutes. Volunteers lead the Red Cross mission in emergency preparedness, prevention and response. Learn how you can make a difference in your community as a Red Cross volunteer during an informational session in Greenville from 5:30-6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5 at the Greenville Consolidated School, Oakes Learning Lab — 130 Pritham Avenue.
Topics will include an overview of Red Cross disaster cycle services, training, deployment to major disasters and available volunteer roles.
“The Red Cross is there for people affected by home fires, hurricanes, floods and more – every day,” Disaster Program Manager Kristen Simas said. “Your time and talents can make a real difference in the community and for people in need.”
Volunteer opportunities in the following areas are now available in Piscataquis County:
Disaster Action Team (DAT), DAT responders are dispatched to disaster scenes – often home fires – to provide immediate help. They assess the needs of the affected individuals and make sure they have food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials.
Casework, volunteers work directly with individuals and families who have been through a disaster to provide financial assistance and to help them develop and implement their recovery plans.
Sheltering/feeding, volunteers set up and run shelters that provide a safe place for people to stay, meals and water, emotional support and more.
Health services, volunteers evaluate the health needs of individuals affected by disaster, make referrals, help obtain replacement medication and equipment and provide financial assistance. Most of the work can be done remotely
Home fire campaign, home fire safety teams visit homes to assess and test existing alarms, install free smoke alarms, help residents develop escape plans and review fire safety checklists with them. Volunteers may also be involved in organizing home fire safety and installation events.
