Annual bird count in Dover-Foxcroft set for Dec. 20
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The 2018 Christmas Bird Count for the Dover-Foxcroft area will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Organizers are looking for counters willing to go into the field to look for birds between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They are also looking for persons willing to watch their yard feeders on Dec. 20 and to report what they see.
The compilers will be Charles and Mary Dorchester of Kenduskeag. They ask that anyone willing to be field counters or feeder watchers call the Dorchesters at 884-8322 ahead of Dec. 20 to be put on the list. Participants are asked to call the Dorchesters again after the count with their species and numbers so that a completed report may be sent to the National Audubon Society to be recorded in the national register.
Field counters are asked to meet at 7 a.m. on Dec. 20 at the Center Coffee House to be assigned count areas. Kate Weatherby will be the on site coordinator. The Center Coffee House is located at 22 East Main Street
In the event of stormy weather on Dec. 20, please call the Dorchesters at 884-8322 to learn plans for an alternate date. And after the count is over, please check the Piscataquis Observer to learn what those taking part have seen.
Past bird count participants are going to miss good friend and faithful feeder compiler, for the last 30 years, Ruth French, who passed away in September. French not only was an avid birder, but she was a remarkable wildlife rehabilitator, along with her husband Martin, and a wonderful friend to many.

WHERE’S OUR CHRISTMAS DINNER? — Spotted on a feeder during a past December were a red cardinal and blue jay, looking as if they were awaiting some treats for the holiday. The annual bird count in the Dover-Foxcroft area will be during the day on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
