DOVER-FOXCROFT — Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Jack Clukey thought it would be a good idea to get businesses more involved in the milestone anniversary as 95 years ago this summer the towns of Dover and Foxcroft became one.

Annually hundreds of alumni from Foxcroft Academy return during the school’s Alumni Weekend and Dover-Foxcroft Shiretown Homecoming, typically held the first weekend of August. For years there was an annual parade and dozens of on-campus activities, ending with fireworks over Sebec Lake. In 2015 it was decided that thought all other activities would continue annually, the parade would no longer be held annually but every five years.

Even so, the influx of people that come through the town during Homecoming weekend is significant and business owners normally see a bump in revenue because of it. This year Clukey approached Executive Director Denise Buzzelli of the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce for collaboration on a plan to give business owners more incentive to actively participate in the weekend’s excitement by offering items or services at prices discounted to promote the 95th anniversary, marked at $.95, $9.50, $95, $950, etc.

The Chamber sent out an invite to the member businesses notifying them of the “95 Sale” and offered to feature the businesses who responded in all Chamber-generated marketing about the weekend. “Several businesses got back to me with some great ideas for sales,” explained Buzzelli, “with some specific to homecoming weekend and others offering the discount throughout the month of August.”

Buzzelli already sent out an E-blast to the Chamber’s mailing list promoting the featured sales, but hopes other businesses will get on board and offer 95 Sale items during Homecoming Weekend. “Free advertising is always nice. I plan to notify all newspapers and news stations within the region about the 95 Sale. Though I would have liked to see a greater initial response from the businesses, I plan to keep spreading the word on the streets so those business owners who did not respond to the email invite will still participate during the anniversary weekend – and it’s not too late to get on the list — call the Chamber at 564-7533!”

Those who did respond came up with some clever ideas for the 95 Sale, such as the Maine Real Estate Network’s broker Tess Keeran, who is offering the ‘95-Day Listing’ – offering sellers the chance to list their homes for 95 days with her, with no long-term contract. Keenan can be reached at 922-1000.

Other non-retail businesses also joined in, such as CW and HM Hayes Law office, offering 5 percent off estate planning services for anyone who schedules their appointment between Aug. 7-11. They can be reached at 564-3314. Throughout August, Katti Simpson of Dental Hygiene Associates of Maine is offering two adult cleanings for $95 total. She can be reached at 343-2157.

The Center Theatre got in on the fun and is offering one movie admission, one large popcorn and drink for $9.50 from Friday, Aug. 4 through Sunday, Aug. 6.

Friday only Carpe Diem Salon is offering multiple items on sale, marked down to $9.50 a piece, including an eyebrow wax, men’s clipper cut, True North Lip Serum, a wet brush, and Chi Thermal Protectant Spray. Also, Friday only, those who schedule an appointment for the Carpe Diem 95 Sale can get a full head of foils, cut and style for only $95. If in the market for a flat iron, and you order ahead of time (mention the 95 Sale), you can get a Chi G2 for $95, an iron that typically retails for $130-$160.

On Aug. 5 the Healing Center of Maine is offering a fabulous deal on their Essential Oil Starter Kit and their 10-Day Biotics Detox Pack, each discounted to $95. Order ahead by calling 343-2157.

Start the day on Saturday with a kick at the Center Coffee House, selling 95-cent large coffees all day, and right around the corner, pick up a bouquet of six bud-wood roses for only 95 cents at Chloe’s Collections Florist (order ahead by calling 564-7181).

Bob’s Sugar House will be offering a 9.5 percent storewide discount, also on Saturday only. The Mill Inn & Café is offering a sandwich or wrap with iced/hot coffee or tea, for only $9.95. Pick up a Mill Café mug for only $9.95, or a Mill sticker for 95 cents. All day Saturday, the Mill is also offering coffee at 95 cents.

“This is a big weekend for Dover-Foxcroft,” continues Buzzelli, “it is so exciting to welcome folks back home, to catch up with old friends, to meet their growing families, and this year, to celebrate Dover and Foxcroft, 95 years later, as the fabulous town it has come to be.”
